What fabrics can I dye?

Group 1: Cotton, Linen, Silk, Rayon, Viscose, Calico, Sisal and Jute.
Group 2: Nylon, Wool, Mohair, Banlon, Cashmere, Lycra and Feathers.
(Polyester and Acrylic fabrics do not absorb dye at all.

How does cold water dying affect material?

Cold water dying will yield a lighter result.

How do I bleach silk?

Use 20ml Hydrogen Peroxide per 1L of water.

How do I know if the dye will work on plastic?

In case of trying to dye plastics, always test the product first.

How do I get a lighter shade?

To achieve a lighter shade of the colour , dilute the dye. (Test samples are recommended until the desired shade is achieved)

What is a fixative?

Dye-It is formulated so that the salt and/or the vinegar acts as the fixative.

What causes the material to come out streaky?

The material was not stirred or rotated enough to allow for even colour coverage.

Does the salt affect any metal that is in the material?

Salt will rust mostly all metals with the exception of stainless steel.

Can I dye a fabric white?

It is not possible to dye fabric white.  This should rather be done by bleaching the fabric.

Can I dye denim?

Yes, you can dye denim, However, you will lose the light/dark contrast associated with denim.

Why do I need to use salt?

Salt opens up the pores in the material allowing the dye to be absorbed.

Will dying affect subsequent washes in my machine?

No, it will not.  Make sure to follow the pack instructions.

Will dying stain my machine?

It may discolour the plastic pieces, however, if you follow the instructions it should prevent this from happening.
